Welcome to our new Local Secretary for Delaware: James Hanby, Sr.

Worshipful Brother James is a Justice of the Peace in New Castle County, Delaware, filling a post held by many members of his family since his 10th great-grandfather, Valentine Hollingsworth, was appointed to the role by William Penn in the late 1600s.

James was raised as a Master Mason in Concord Lodge No. 625 in Concordville, PA in 1996. He served as Master of Granite-Corinthian Lodge No. 34 in Wilmington, DE in 2006-07, and is currently serving as Master of Washington Lodge No. 1, also in Wilmington. He has presided over his Chapter, Council, and Commandery in the York Rite, and is a member of the Scottish Rite in the Valley of Wilmington and Nur Shrine.

In the Grand Lodge of Delaware, James serves as Chair of the Board of Governors for the Albert Thatcher Hanby Trust, established under the will of his third great-uncle in 1947. The trust controls an endowment and 100-acre farm. Today the YMCA operates the Hanby Outdoor Center on the farm and the Trust provides funds to provide ‘camperships’ to kids who otherwise couldn’t afford to attend. James also founded the Brandywine Education Foundation to provide scholarships to local students to attend college or trade school.
